Sanity Management

  • Take the free coffee in the reception office before your first check-in. It is renewable every shift and the machine runs on a ~150-second cooldown, so take it early rather than as a panic button.
  • Keep one Chocolate Bar ($120) in your inventory from Shift 4. It restores 60 sanity with no cooldown โ€” four times a full cup of coffee.
  • Check the Floor 1 break room lockers at the start of every shift. They respawn each shift and can hold a free Coffee or Chocolate Bar.
  • Playing Psychologist doubles the sanity you recover from every sip, which turns cheap items into emergency saves.

Anomaly Checking

  • Run the three-step check in the same order every time: visual โ†’ photo โ†’ CCTV. A patient can carry more than one tell, and the later layers are the ones players skip.
  • Treat flickering lightsas a "pause and look" signal, not as proof. They only tell you something is nearby โ€” you still have to confirm which patient it is.
  • A low, distorted voice at the window always accompanies Crooked Face, Three Eyes and Unnatural Facial Appearance. If the voice is off, stop and re-check.
  • When you are unsure, rejecting costs you far less than admitting an anomaly. See When to Reject a Patient.

Item Tricks Worth Knowing

Maple Syrup โ†’ Bed Monster

Buy Maple Syrup from the vending machine and feed the Bed Monster to make it retreat. Useless on anything else, so only buy it when the Bed Monster is actually active.

Flashlight โ†’ Hiders

The flashlight does more than light hallways โ€” it reveals Hiders and other wall anomalies that are invisible in normal lighting.

Coffee โ†’ Head Banger

Brew coffee, take two sips, then offer the cup at the window with the E prompt. The Head Banger drinks it and leaves without smashing your shutters.

Protective Gear โ†’ Slime Shifts

Grab the free Protective Gear in the lobby before Shift 4+. It cuts slime-related sanity drain for a whole shift and costs nothing.

Wheelchair โ†’ Fainted Patients

From Shift 3 the lobby wheelchair moves incapacitated patients to beds far faster than carrying them. Return it to its spot when you are done.

Taser vs Gun

The X-Taser only buys time; the Gun permanently removes a threat. Pick based on whether you need an escape window or a permanent answer.

Upgrade & Spending Priorities

  1. Nurse class (10 Animal Coins) โ€” the cheapest permanent quality-of-life upgrade in the game.
  2. Faster DNA Analysis ($110, Shift 4) โ€” cuts DNA processing from about 9s to 4.5s.
  3. Faster Computers ($110, Shift 4) โ€” room computers process roughly 33% faster.
  4. +1 Carry Capacity ($100, Shift 6) โ€” one more slot saves several trips per shift.
  5. Surgeon class (2,500 Animal Coins) โ€” the long-term goal for free-to-play players.

Skip the extra check-in window until you can staff both desks in co-op โ€” a second window you cannot watch is just a second way to admit an anomaly.

Late-Shift Habits

  • Stock the vending items you actually need between shifts, never during an emergency event.
  • Keep the extinguisher route in mind from Shift 3 โ€” fires spread faster than you can run back for it.
  • In co-op, split roles (check-in / supply / CCTV) instead of everyone hovering at the desk.
  • Re-read the Journal and achievement list occasionally โ€” several bounties are passive and easy to miss.

Tips & Tricks FAQ

What is the single most important habit in Animal Hospital?

Always run the full three-step check before you open the shutters: visual inspection at the window, photo check, then CCTV. Most deaths come from skipping the CCTV step when the patient already looks normal.

Which class should a new player buy first?

Nurse for 10 Animal Coins. The extra inventory slot removes most of the back-and-forth between rooms, which is the biggest time sink in early shifts. Save for Surgeon (2,500 Animal Coins) afterwards.

How do I stop losing sanity so fast?

Grab the free coffee from the reception office at the start of every shift, and carry one Chocolate Bar ($120, 60 sanity) from Shift 4 onward. The Psychologist class doubles the sanity you recover from every sip.

Are the upgrade machines worth buying?

Yes for two of them: Faster DNA Analysis ($110) and Faster Computers ($110) from Shift 4 pay for themselves within a couple of shifts. Skip cosmetic upgrades until your core loop is comfortable.
